Central African Republic - An Introduction

The Central African Republic is a non-coastal country in Central Africa. Its neighboring countries are Chad in the north, Cameroon in the west, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the south and Sudan in the east. The Central African Republic is a member country of several Central African organizations, including the Economic and Monetary Union (CEMAC), the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC), Central African Peace and Security Council (COPAX), and the Central Bank of Central African States (BEAC).

More than 80 ethnic groups lives together in Central African Republic (CAR), each group has its own language and culture. Approximately, 55% people live in rural areas. The chief agricultural areas are around the Bossangoa and Bambari. Bangui, Berberati, Bangassou, and Bossangoa are the most densely populated urban centers. The climate in Central African Republic is tropical and ranges from humid equatorial in the South to Sahelo – Sudanese in the north; hot, dry winters with mild to hot, wet summers.

The physical geography of Central African Republic consists of flat, or rolling plateau savanna approximately 1640 ft high above sea level. A granite plateau named Yade Massif lies at an altitude of 3750 ft in the northwest. Approximately 8% of total land area is covered with forest. The forest is highly diverse, and includes commercially important species of Ayous, Sapelli and Sipo. The northern part of Central African Republic is generally affected with harmattan winds, which are hot, dry and carry dust; northeast region is desert. The rest of the country is prone to floods from rivers Congo, Mbomou, Uele, Ubangi, Sangha and Nile.

Agriculture and forestry together forms the backbone of economy of the Central African Republic. More than half of the GDP comes from agriculture and agriculture based products. Diamond industry accounts for 40% of GDP and timber 16%. The Central African Republic lags behind in livestock development due to presence of tsetse fly.

The Central African Republic has good potential as eco tourist destinations. The country is famous for its forest elephants. The Dzanga-Sangha National Park is a rain forest area in the southwest. The Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park in the north has populations of leopards, lions, and rhinos.

The government in Central African Republic is comprises of strong executive branch (president, vice president, prime minister, and council of ministers), and weak legislative and judicial branch. The president is the supreme authority in the government. The Central African Republic maintains good relations with foreign countries including United States and France.
